Fundamentals of Drawing I
This class is designed to acquaint the student with the basic language of drawing. Through a series of prolonged exercises, the student is presented with the fundamental elements of visual communication, such as line, mass, value (tone), and proportion. The student will produce highly finished drawings of relatively simple objects as a means of acquiring the practical, hands-on understanding of this material.

Building on the lessons learned in Fundamentals of Drawing I, this course presents more sophisticated material, such as a greater refinement of surface modeling (shading), structural accuracy, and more complex compositional programs. The student is also encouraged to make personal choices regarding subject matter and content in order to foster individuality and an understanding of artistic communication.

Digital Color & Computers
TThis course will investigate color in pigment and light while acquiring basic computer imaging skills. Using Adobe Photoshop, the student, through a series of exercises of increasing complexity, will investigate color spaces, color interactions, and practical applications of color in art, design and the environment. In addition, the student will be immersed in basic design principles and the creative process.

Contemporary 20th Century Art History
This course will examine the visual arts in the 20th Century beginning with the rise of Modernism in the late 1800s to the present day. We will focus on the development of the arts through the analysis of movements and philosophies, critical theory and cultural influences. We will study the works of individual artists and groups, familiarizing students with the foundations of art appreciation. Students will develop critical skills for the interpretation, discussion and appreciation of painting, sculpture, photography, architecture and other art forms.

Life Drawing
The student is first introduced to a system for ascertaining proper proportional measurement, in line only, in order to mitigate some of the complexities of working with the human figure. When this is established, methods for accurately recording the tonal patter based on the close observation of intricate anatomical elements are presented. The figure model assumes prolonged poses to ensure enough working time for the students to absorb the lessons taught.
Prerequisites: ARTS 130 and 131.

Summer Painting Workshop/Advanced Painting
A course designed for students at various skill levels including those who have never painted before through more advanced painters. Emphasis for beginners will be placed in developing essential skills and concepts, starting with basic support preparation, color mixing and the understanding of techniques required to create a finished painting. More advanced students ill focus on personal development and understanding of concept and techniques. A variety of materials may be utilized, including oil and/or acrylic, canvas and wood.

This ceramic course places emphasis on the potter's wheel as a tool for the development of functional and non-functional work. It is structured to develop individual skills in the basics of wheel throwing or more advanced techniques such as closed forms, lids, altered forms or multiple form construction.

Special Studies in Music: Digital Composition/Songwriting
A hands-on workshop for aspiring songwriters, this course will explore the songwriting process from initial inspiration to finished product. Beginning students will gain an understanding of song structure, and will learn the basics of digital sound recording. More advanced students will have the opportunity to have their work evaluated and work more independently to craft finished recordings.
