The SDES philosophy establishes that students and their needs are
the driving forces for our behaviors as part of the Southampton
College community. We create environments conducive to student learning,
serve as allies and advocates for student needs, and create opportunities
for students to develop as individuals and as leaders. We:
- Create a student-friendly atmosphere, including office surroundings
and printed materials
- Focus on students' concerns without being distracted by operational
issues
- Listen to students in order to understand issues and concerns
- Explain services to students without using jargon
- Become educated about other SDES offices so that proper and
effective referrals can be made
- Resolve issues efficiently and promptly, and follow-up on the
student's behalf
- Be attentive to students, both in and out of the office
- Involve students in decision making and committees
- Consider the student perspective when developing and reviewing
policies and procedures
- Watch for, and respond to, community, state and federal issues
that may impact students
- Ask students for input regarding each office's strengths and
weaknesses
- Give students the necessary tools to gather information and
learn independently
- Use technology to facilitate student access to information and
services
- Act as an ally and advocate for students and student groups
- Serve as a role model and mentor by giving constructive feedback.
