Presents Inaugural Lecture Series
Leading experts in the field of homeland security—including
Rep. Gary Ackerman—will visit the C.W.
Post Campus of Long Island University to share their experiences
and insights as part of an important lecture series.
The Homeland Security Management Institute, which is based at Long
Island University’s new Riverhead Location, is offering its
inaugural lecture series free to the public at Long Island University’s
C.W. Post Campus in Brookville, New York. Five sessions comprise
the effort, which will cover such topics as how the government is
facing current issues of security, the origins of al-Qai’da,
how to prepare for natural disasters and the challenges of search
and rescue missions.

The Red File™: Physical and Financial Preparedness (November
15, 2006): Michael Emmerman, a managing director and money manager
at Neuberger Berman, LLC and director of the nonprofit organization
Special Operations Support, will discuss the tools needed to
prepare personally and professionally for life-altering events
such as hurricanes, fires, floods and earthquakes.

Rescue Mission: The Perfect Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom
(November 29, 2006): Retired Air Force combat commander and
C.W. Post graduate David Ruvola will chronicle his personal
experience as commander of the rescue mission featured in the
book and film “The Perfect Storm” as well as his
experiences with the Air Force 101st Expeditionary Rescue Squadron
in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Origins of al-Qai’da (December 7, 2006): Counterintelligence
expert Richard Pena will discuss his current work with the Northeast
Regional Counterintelligence Office at Brookhaven National Laboratory
and his role on the FBI/NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force, where
he conducted criminal and intelligence investigations involving
al-Qai’da and Sunni extremists in Afghanistan, Pakistan,
Europe and the Caribbean.

Current Issues in Homeland Security: (December 13, 2006) Rep.
Gary Ackerman, Fifth Congressional District of New York, will
share his perspective as the senior member of the House International
Relations Committee, where he addresses issues of national security,
nuclear proliferation and terrorism in the Middle East, Asia,
Europe and Latin America.
All lectures will be held at 7 p.m. in Room 119 of Humanities
Hall at the C.W. Post Campus, 720 Northern Boulevard (Route 25A),

The Long Island University Homeland Security Management
Institute offers an online Master of Science degree and a 15-credit
graduate level Advanced Certificate program as well as on-site training
for first responders and emergency personnel. These two programs
are available to professionals working in law enforcement, emergency
management, the military, fire fighting or HazMat operations, corporate
or private security, the intelligence community, or any other Homeland
Security field, as well as to those who aspire to pursue management
