Southampton won 84-74, improving to 6-4 in the NYCAC (6-6 overall). Six of the eight players that played for the Colonials scored in double figures. The leader was Jye Watson with 23 points (5-for-9 from 3-point range), 6 rebounds and 3 steals. The other scorers were: Leon Pursoo - 13 pts and 7 assists, Billy Mandell - 13 pts (4-for-8 from 3-point range), 4 rebs and 2 assists, Wayne Inniss - 12 pts and 7 rebs, Eric Bradley - 11 pts, 7 rebs and 3 assists, and Joaquin Smits - 10 pts, 5 rebs and 2 steals. "We were getting any shot that we wanted," assistant coach Pete Quinn reports. "The guys were moving the ball well and getting it to each other in a good rhythm." The Colonials opened the game by hitting 10-of-18 3-point shots, leading at halftime by a score of 49-38. The Colonials remained hot with an 8-2 run to open up the second half, punctuated by Smits stealing a pass intended for Dowling guard Troy Mills and slamming home a dunk. Dowling got back to within five points with under five minutes to go, but the Colonials regained their poise and started moving the ball again. Jermaine Clark paced Bridgeport (5-4 league) with 23 points. The Colonials are now 5-2 in the NYCAC (5-4 overall) and one of the league's surprise teams so far this year. A pre-season poll had predicted the Colonials wouldn't even make the playoffs, but Southampton, almost midway through the season, is in second place.

It was the first pair of consecutive double-doubles for the Colonials since Jason Lewis did it Feb. 13-16, 2002. Southampton at NYIT
Overcoming an 18-5 early deficit, the Runnin' Colonials buckled down on defense and beat NYIT 81-72 in their NYCAC opener. A preseason coaches poll placed NYIT at No. 5 in the league while Southampton was ranked No. 10 and not expected to make the playoffs. "We're going to surprise a lot of people this year," Colonials assistant coach Pete Quinn declared before the game -- and the Colonials did just that. Newcomer Curtis Allen had his second-straight 19-point performance while junior Jye Watson added 16 points and grabbed seven boards. Sophomores also pitched in: Kino Smits and Wayne Inniss each scored 10 while point guard Leon Pursoo had nine points, five assists and four steals. Tafare Berryman grabbed five boards in 15 minutes, but Quinn credits junior Billy Mandell for shutting down NYIT star Kendall Holloman as the turning point of the game. That, and the fact that the Colonials hit 12 of 19 three-pointers. "I guess all that extra shooting we've been doing in practice is paying off," Quinn said. The Colonials are 1-1, 1-0 league. Southampton went 1-2 in this six-team, weekend tournament, losing to New Haven 3-0 (30-26, 20-20, 30-28), beating Lehman 3-0 (30-14, 30-15, 30-16) then losing to Queens 3-0 (30-21, 30-25, 30-26) to finish in fourth place overall. Vassar won the tourney over New Haven 3-1 (30-22, 28-30, 30-22, 32-30).
