THE 1996 LADY COLONIALS:
Optimism on the Block

Kevin DesLauriers again will coach a young squad this season in the competitive New York Collegiate Athletic Conference. After two rebuilding years during which the Southampton Graduate Campus women's volleyball team compiled records of 7-25 and 6-20, respectively, the return of six players gives DesLauriers cause for optimism.

"This is a better squad than in previous years," says DesLauriers, "but everybody on the floor must contribute for us to win."

Captains Spalding and Serino
Middle blocker Heather Spalding and outside hitter Briar Serino, who will share the captaincy this season, are the only seniors on the 1996 Lady Colonials. Other returnees are sophomores Donna Hollner, Lauren D'Elia, Julie Cullum and Jenelle Close.

Newcomers to the team are first-year students Laura Bonner, a 5-10 outside hitter from Greene, NY; Kristy Nelmes, a 6-0 middle blocker from North Bellmore; LeahMiller, a 5-9 setter/opposite hitter from Langhorne, Pa; and Cynthia Edwardson, a transfer from East Moriches. "The three freshmen are a pretty tall group," said DesLauriers. "We expect a lot from them."

Host of Oct. 14 Tourney
Southampton will host its 12th annual Windmill Classic on Saturday, October 14, in the gymnasium. During the NYCAC season, volleyball powers Dowling and Pace should provide the fiercest competition.
