THE 1996 LADY COLONIALS:
Defense Makes the Difference

With a 13-3-1 mark (5-2 in NYCAC) last year, the 1996 Southampton Graduate Campus women's soccer team enjoyed the best record in the program's 13-year history. To continue her success, Head Coach Jacki Paton will rely heavily on her defense.

MVP Returns
Seniors Gina Lazaro (a second team NYCAC goalkeeper in 1995 with seven shutouts), Kerry Gorman and Julie Veen are co-captains this season. Lazaro, who was Southampton's MVP last year, also lettered in basketball and softball. "Gina's goaltending keeps us in games," says Coach Paton. "She gives us the opportunity to win."

Joyce Fender, a sophomore sweeper, made second team NYCAC last year. She leads a defense that includes Veen, juniors Kim Stahl and Cassie Arroyo, sophomore Mary Jackson, and first-year defender Leslie Engeldrum. Six seniors return to Southampton, including forward Tammy Walsh and midfielders Connie Chase and Sue Pinkall.

Improved "O"
Allison Mullen of Ringwood, N.J., who scored a team-high 21 goals last year, is one reason for optimism on offense. Mullen, a sophomore forward, was a first-team NYCAC selection and Rookie of the Year. In addition, Christa Jewett of Chandler, Az., formerly a defender, has been moved to the front line to provide added scoring punch.

The Lady Colonials will face a tougher schedule in 1996, and can expect many one-goal games. Bloomsburg, Merrimack, Adelphi and New Hampshire are expected to field competitive clubs.
