Vying for a Title

Southampton Graduate Campus?s women?s soccer team accomplished something remarkable in 2001: they swept the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference awards, bringing home ?Player of the Year,? ?Rookie of the Year? and ?Coach of the Year? titles. Now, longtime coach Mark Dawson has built a program that is ready to contend for an NCAA Tournament berth after making the Eastern College Athletic Conference playoffs in 2001. The team won an ECAC title in 1990. In recent years, the Lady Colonials have featured a winning chemistry of top local talent and international all-stars including rough-and-tumble scorer Asa Birgersdotter of Sweden who set a freshman record with 18 goals in 2001. Icelandic National Player Begga Laxdal tied the campus record for goals in a season with 21 that year as the Lady Colonials went 12-5, nearly winning a league title. A young team with an abundance of talent and a dedicated coaching staff, the Lady Colonials are sure to vie for many more titles in the seasons ahead.

Colonial Generals

Mark Dawson, a 1996 alumnus of Southampton College, begins his fifth season as head of the women's soccer team. Since 1995, Dawson also has served as assistant coach for men's soccer. Whether on the field with the men's or women's team, his knowledge of the sport has helped both squads find success. Dawson, 29, played midfield for the Colonials from 1992-94, and was a starter for Southampton Graduate Campus' 1994 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship team. A resident of Mastic, N.Y., he graduated in 1991 from William Floyd High School, where he now teaches Physical Education. "It's very gratifying to work for the same College and high school I attended," said Dawson, who received his M.A. in Physical Education from Hofstra University last year. "I'm able to give something back to both places.' He was named NYCAC Coach of the Year in 2001.

Tom Liguori of Wantagh, N.Y., a 1998 graduate of Southampton Graduate Campus, enters his fourth year as assistant coach. A former defender and captain, he played on the Colonials' 1994 and 1995 ECAC soccer championships. He earned a B.S. in Business Administration and an M.A. in Physical Education at Hofstra. He currently teaches in Wantagh.

Mike LaCarrubba of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., is a third-year assistant coach and 2000 graduate of Southampton Graduate Campus. He was a defender on the 1999 Colonials men's squad that made it to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
