Women's Basketball 2002-03 Outlook
It's a sure thing. Every season the Lady Colonials are tabbed to be one of the Northeast's top basketball programs and they always live up to expectations. In the past eight years, they have won seven prestigious Eastern College Athletic Conference berths and two championships. Now, under the veteran stewardship of new coach Pat McGunnigle, the Lady Colonials are ready for an NCAA berth. In 2001-02, the Lady Colonials were the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference's most imposing team, with seven players at six feet or taller. "We also were one of the league's most athletic teams," McGunnigle said. "Our players can really get up court in a hurry." The team returned all of its six-footers and all of its starters for 2002-03, including junior college All-American point guard Dani Thomas (13.8 points per game in 2001-02 for the Colonials), 2000-01 Ohio High School Player of the Year Amber Gooden (10.6 ppg) and senior captain Kerri Rueb (8.9 ppg, 6.7 rebounds per game). Pat McGunnigle is a first-year head coach with the Lady Colonials and he brings a wealth of experience to the staff.
With over 30 years experience in the game, McGunnigle has guided teams to a 78 percent win ratio over his career.
McGunnigle has developed All-American players over the years including Jimmy Spillane (UCLA) and Rick Pitino, former coach of the Boston Celtics and Kentucky Wildcats and current coach at the University of Louisville.
