Outlook 2002

One of Southampton Graduate Campus?s most elite athletic programs in recent years has been men?s soccer, which is consistently rated with the country?s top teams. In 1999, the Colonials received their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth, getting as far as the national quarterfinals before losing a heartbreaker in quadruple overtime. In 2000, the Colonials won a second-straight league title and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation, and in 2001, the team received an Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament berth. During those three seasons, the Colonials were a combined 40-9-6. Several players have gone on to All American honors, including prolific scorers Johan Kron and Peter Nilsson and four-year-starting goalie Roger Svensson. Defender and former captain Nick Rotiroti, who graduated in 2000, played professionally in Europe and now plays in Canada. A ?virtual? Peter Nilsson was featured in PlayStation?s FIFA 2002 video game as a member of the Swedish National Team. Taking over as coach in 2002, former captain Andreas Lindberg has put together a team with players from several countries, promoting an international style of play that?s sure to lead to more championships for the Colonials.

Coaches 2002

Head coach Andreas Lindberg and Assistant Coach John Newman.

Colonial Generals

First-year skipper Andreas Lindberg is no stranger to coaching. Besides being captain the past two years where he was a very vocal leader, he was head coach for under-23 elite squads in Sweden. He has three levels of European coaching certification. "I am a born coach," he said. Lindberg fulfilled a longtime dream of his this past spring after his soccer eligibility was up. He played lacrosse at Southampton Graduate Campus under respected, 10-year coach Ralph Pepe. "He taught me a lot about relating to players and building team cohesion," Lindberg said. Lindberg had been asked to play on the Swedish national lacrosse team. The new coach will have to rebuild a team that has lost several key players in the past two years, including three All-Americans: star scorers Johan Kron and Peter Nilsson and goalie Roger Svensson. Plus, at least on the field, the team loses its cornerstone player, Lindberg, who twice was named to the NYCAC all-star team.

Mark Dawson, a 1996 alumnus of Southampton, begins his sixth season as assistant coach. In the summer of 1998, he was named head coach for Lady Colonials soccer. From 1992-94, he played midfield for the Colonials, and was a starter for the 1994 championship team. Dawson lives in Mastic.

John Newman joins the team as a first year assistant coach.
