Net Success

Women's Tennis Southampton’s youngest intercollegiate program, women’s tennis, enters its third year and continues to build a solid foundation of young talent that will ensure future success.

The Colonials went 1-7 last year after a 4-4 inaugural campaign. However, the team showed potential. The capper to the 2000 season was a home contest against St. Joseph’s College on October 11 when Southampton won 8-1. Kate Schumann and Jennifer Grabianowski, Jeanne Lupton and Diane Raso, and Amy Kozer and Annie Silkowski were doubles winners. Singles winners: Schumann, Stephanie Schneider, Lupton, Raso and Jennifer Condit.

Lupton, Raso and Schneider return for the 2001 campaign along with promising newcomer Jessica Hoffman, who could vie for the team’s No. 1 position. Also ready to contend are sophomores Rachel Lux and Nicole Boucha.

“We have a talented core of young players,” said coach Glenn Nathan. “The future looks bright.”

Coach 2001

Head Coach Glenn Nathan.

Colonial General

Entering his second season with the Lady Colonials is Coach Glenn Nathan, 43, of Shirley, NY.

A top amateur who was a standout at Adelphi, Nathan has fought against the odds since he was seven years old. He grew up with constant kidney problems, but still didn’t give up his dreams of being a tennis star. He excelled as a varsity captain at Sachem High School and went on to No. 1 singles at Suffolk Community College. But then his kidneys totally gave out and he was on dialysis. Still, that didn’t deter Nathan, who went onto become Adelphi’s ace.

Finally, after years of kidney disease, Nathan found a compatible donor – his father, Norman. Last year, Nathan won a gold medal in the U.S. Transplant Games in Orlando, Fla. Nathan also coached at SUNY-Old Westbury, with his team going 12-1 and winning a conference title in 1999. He is director of sales for Insula-Dome, a skylight manufacturer, and lives with his wife, Denise, and three children.
