Outlook

Last year, they were young but determined. This year Southampton Graduate Campus' softball team returns experienced and even more resolute. Determination led the team to their first playoff appearance since 1992, where they gave Queens, the eventual champs of the tournament, their toughest competition. The game ended with a 3-2 loss and with the Colonials' hearts on the field as Shayma Hill took a shutout into the final inning. The 2001 season ended with Southampton 10-12 in the NYCAC and 13-27 overall.

Returning to the Colonial field is junior pitcher Kim Carroll (1.79 ERA), who fully recovered from a knee injury that prohibited her from batting. In 2001 Carroll's finesse and fellow pitcher Shayma Hill's power combined to give the Colonials a fierce one-two punch. Carroll was the NYCAC's Academic Player of the Year in 2001. Hill (4.09 ERA) dominates the field with her fastball, but also takes advantage of the four other pitches in her rotation. Sophomore Allison Hoyt returns as the third pitcher. She was recovering from a volleyball injury last spring, but now she is ready to hurl in the strikes. She also plays second base.

Talented sophomore outfielders Erin Molloy and Stephanie Valentinetti, "create a solid wall as the final line of defense," according to Coach Cassie Arroyo, return undivided. Molloy was named as the Colonial of the Week last April 9 for going 5-for-8 with six RBI, four runs and three doubles and for playing errorless outfield in the two games verse Bridgeport, which SC won 4-3 and 15-7.

Also on April 9, another gifted Colonial was honored. Rose Zollo, now a sophomore, earned the NYCAC's Rookie of the Week title. Zollo is a versatile player who according to coaches, "is a total team player willing to give whatever it takes to play and win."

Senior twins Robin and Shannon Owens return for their second season as captains. Last year, as the only juniors on a seniorless team, the Owens sensations provided hustle and determination. Shannon was the steady leadership behind the plate. Robin, who had a .308 batting average throughout a week, earned the Colonial of the Week honors on April 2 for her stellar and errorless defense in 40 chances. In addition to their softball duties, the sisters were four -year members of the Lady Colonial basketball team, which they co-captained this year. Joining them in the ranks of captain are Carroll and sophomore infielder Jen Maiorini.

Two other key returnees are juniors Tiffany Lubold, and Karen Geaney. Lubold is the team's utility player. She began her career as a second baseman and then moved to the outfield. Geaney in the teams thrid basemen.

Talented newcomers are Crystal George of Huntington Station, N.Y., Marisa Caroll of Melville, N.Y., Justine Barra of Smithtown, N.Y., and Virginia McGovern of Hampton Bays.

2002 Softball Coaches Jacki Paton, Kenn Beck and Cassie Arroyo.

Colonial Generals

Cassie Arroyo enters her second season as head coach for Southampton Graduate Campus' softball team. She graduated from the college in 1998 and began assistant coaching for the team a year later under the guidance of Cindy Corwith. When Arroyo first came to Southampton as a freshman, she dominated the plate as catcher. During her sophomore year she challenged herself and learned how to pitch and by her senior year, she mastered this talent. When Corwith transferred her duties to Arroyo, she said, "Cassie's knowledge of the game made her a valuable asset to my coaching staff. I'm leaving the team in very capable hands." Arroyo proved that in addition to being capable, she was confident. Throughout the season, she reminded her team and fans, "I have a great group of kids who have a never-say-die attitude." Arroyo resides in Hampton Bays.

Jacki Paton returns for yet another year with the Colonials. She has been an assistant coach at Southampton since 1992. Paton graduated from SC in 1991. She currently works for Mercy High School in Riverhead as a math teacher where she also coaches varsity soccer and basketball. "Jacki has been an integral part of Colonial softball since 1992," said Coach Arroyo. "Her new ideas and strategies make learning fun for the players. She is a great communicator." Paton resides in Hampton Bays.

Entering his second year as assistant coach for the Colonials and adding a different angle of expertise to the team is Kenn Beck. "Kenn is an avid player with a great knowledge of the game," said Coach Arroyo. Beck is a sub-contractor and resides in Manorville.
