Rookie sharpshooter Jye Watson is one of three young guns joining the Runnin' Colonials this season. Along with freshmen Billy Mandell and Chris Taylor, Watson joins one of the team's best recruiting classes in recent memory. And he traveled the furthest to get here.
Watson, an 18-year-old 6-foot-4 guard from Warrnambool, Australia, is deadly three-point threat, he was a member of his country's junior Olympic team and averaged 17.9 points a game playing for the Warrnambool Seahawks, an elite club team. "He's mentally tough for his age with all of the international experience he's had," Coach Charlie Peck said.
Watson played a year at Marion High School in Florida in the backcourt with Teddy Dupay, who now stars at the University of Florida. Peck heard of Watson through Bobby Cunningham, a former player under Peck when he was an assistant coach at New York Tech. Cunningham now plays pro in Australia and alerted Peck that Watson was coming to the states.
"He's one of the kids who's going to have to score for us from long range," Peck said.
