His coaches predict this will be a breakout year for one of the team's most likeable players, sophomore Richard Fleming. After being red-shirted as a freshman and seeing limited time last season behind team MVP Mark Person, the 6-foot-6 forward is ready to demonstrate his skills on the wing and inside.
One of three foreign imports on this season's roster -- Jordan Sztern of Canada and Jye Watson of Australia being the others -- Fleming is an athletic, versatile player who comes to Southampton via Bridgetown, Barbados.
He was recruited by fellow Barbados native Henry Miller, Southampton's volunteer coach last season. "By the time he is a junior and has gained a little experience, he should be a pretty good player in this league," said Miller in his scouting report. "Richard is 6-foot-6 but he runs like a small guard."
Fleming, described as a very coachable, hard working team player, is very effective in pressing situations. "He's very versatile and can play the 2, 3 or 4 positions," said Coach Peck. "And with his long arms, he can deflect and steal a lot of balls. That helps us create havoc when we press."
A graduate of Combermere High School, Fleming starred for the basketball team coached by Francis Williams. He started about half of Southampton's games last year and proved to be a solid defensive player with a decent midrange jumper. "We're going to try to get him in more scoring situations this year," Peck said. "Jye shouldn't make rookie mistakes - he's played against men in the past, not boys."
