2004 Outlook
The Southampton Graduate Campus Men's Volleyball team is back in the Hay Division after a solid 15-10 season and now have their sights set on moving up another step, to the top rated Tait Division. After a tough 2002 season in which they finished 6-16 the team was demoted to the lowest ranked Odneal Division, but they didn't hang their heads, and they didn't give up. Historically, Men's Volleyball is one of Southampton's most successful programs, and the team won five titles in the 1990s alone. With three seniors leading the way, Scott Schult, Joe Daigler, and Matt Vilbas, the Colonials opened the 2003 season on a tough note, going 1-3 over their first four matches, but then things began to click. They put together a streak of six consecutive victories and soon found themselves on top of the standings with a 10-4 overall record and 5-0 in the Odneal Division. The team would go on to win five of their last ten matches and finish the season with a 15-10 record, 8-0 in the division, claiming the division title.

The Colonials now have a seat in the Hay Division and have made a few changes. A new head coach, Dave Maccio, and a new assistant coach, former player Joe Daigler, are now at the helm and headline the list of changes for this hopeful men's team. They are losing two key players, former co-captains, middle hitter Scott Schult and outside hitter Joe Daigler, but between recruits and young talent rising to the top, their confidence is overwhelming.

The team itself is a talented mixture of young and old with five upperclassmen and five underclassmen. The coaches are looking for the experienced players to carry the team, especially sophomore outside hitter Seamus Martin and junior setter Ionut Ghira who are expected to fill the shoes of Daigler and Schult. Along with the coaching changes and the help of the upperclassmen, the 2004 Colonials should put up solid numbers on their way back to another, more impressive, division title.

Colonial Generals

Former Colonial First year coach David Maccio of Dix Hills, N.Y., comes to the Southampton Graduate Campus division champs with a fresh perspective and a youthful enthusiasm. Maccio is a first-time college head coach and looks forward to the challenge. "As a young coach, I relate with and understand my players a little better," he said. "I speak their language."

Maccio played volleyball for two seasons at Springfield College where he earned his B.S. in Applied Exercise. He has coached at the high school and club levels, most recently as the head coach of Junior Varsity at Ward Melville High School. "I look forward to working with this team, our returning players know how to win and our young guys have the dedication necessary to get where they need to be on the college level." When asked about his coaching style Maccio said, "I pride myself on hard work, commitment and intensity and I expect the same from my squad. This season should be a good one and I look forward to stabilizing it for seasons to come."

Southampton Graduate Campus graduate Joe Daigler is the assistant coach this season. Daigler, a former Men's Volleyball standout here at Southampton will be a constant reminder of the program’s success. Daigler, who graduated with a degree in Liberal Studies, looks forward to the opportunity to begin his coaching career.
