The 2005 Lady Colonials represent versatility and perseverance.

Although they have lost nine players from last year, the team is zoned in on making the playoffs to show that Southampton isn’t quitting in its final season (Southampton’s undergraduate program is moving to sister college CW Post, meaning an end to its athletics program).

The six returnees bring experience and muscle, having started in more than one position and knowing that trend will continue this season.

Senior Marisa Carroll will lead the rotation and will also see time in the outfield. She leads a rotation combining finesse with outright power.

Senior Chrissie Fagereng has shown she can handle the pressure at shortstop, being a threat from both sides of the plate.

Also back is senior Justine Barra, whose powerful arm and quick reflexes make her a natural for third base.

Senior Laura Maloney will play first base but will also be playing centerfield as well as showing off her pitching arm at the mound along with Junior Ashley Jones who will also spend some time patrolling the outfield which is suited for her speed and strong arm.

Sophomore Mary Potamousis will see some time behind the plate and at second base.

Joining these veterans is a talented pack of new and familiar faces. They’re looking to make an immediate impact.

Senior Abbi Kenner brings her fleet feet from the soccer field to the softball diamond, playing infield and outfield. Another rookie is senior Missy Taylor, who brings a powerful swing to the plate and will see a lot of time in the outfield.

Freshman Natalie Traina boasts an impressive repertoire, playing anywhere on the field. Not only is she a talented middle infielder, she can play outfield or even catch if the need arises.

Freshman Toni Mangogna will backstop for a good portion of the season but can also play first base and mashes with the best of them at the plate, scorching line drives consistently.

Freshman Lisa DeNicolis will be at third base as well, showcasing her strong throwing arm and reflexes.

Freshman Jessica Hicks rounds out the rotation brining an impressive bat to compliment her fireballing arm and first base skills.

The blend of versatile players has the Lady Colonial coaches confident that the mix they put out on the field will be able to smoke the competition and make a game of it.

Colonial Generals Cassie Arroyo enters her fifth season as head coach for Southampton Graduate Campus' softball team. She graduated from the college in 1998 and began assistant coaching for the team a year later under the guidance of Cindy Corwith. When Arroyo first came to Southampton as a freshman, she dominated the plate as catcher. During her sophomore year she challenged herself and learned how to pitch and by her senior year, she mastered this talent. When Corwith transferred her duties to Arroyo, she said, "Cassie's knowledge of the game made her a valuable asset to my coaching staff. I'm leaving the team in very capable hands." Arroyo proved that in addition to being capable, she was confident. Throughout the season, she reminded her team and fans, "I have a great group of kids who have a never-say-die attitude." Arroyo resides in Hampton Bays.

Entering his fifth season as assistant coach for the Colonials and adding a different angle of expertise to the team is Kenn Beck. "Kenn is an avid player with a great knowledge of the game," said Coach Arroyo. Beck is assistant to the Director of Alumni Affairs and resides in Manorville.

Jacki Paton returns for yet another year with the Colonials. She has been an assistant coach at Southampton since 1992. Paton graduated from SC in 1991. She currently works for Mercy High School in Riverhead as a math teacher where she also coaches varsity soccer and basketball. "Jacki has been an integral part of Colonial softball since 1992," said Coach Arroyo. "Her new ideas and strategies make learning fun for the players. She is a great communicator." Paton resides in Hampton Bays.
