Colonials 2003

Head Coach Mark Dawson and Assistant Coach Mike LaCarrubba
Captains Jessica Coulon and Asa Birgersdotter

Vying for a Title

Southampton Graduate Campus’s women’s soccer team accomplished something remarkable in 2001 by sweeping the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference awards. They brought home the “Player of the Year,” “Rookie of the Year,” and “Coach of the Year” titles, along with securing a spot in the Eastern College Athletic Conference playoffs. The team won the ECAC title in 2002 and is looking to repeat this season. Head Coach Mark Dawson, in his sixth season, has built a program that can now seriously contend for a NCAA berth. Dawson himself played midfield for the Colonials from 1992-94 and was a starter for the Colonials 1994 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship team.

Over the years the Lady Colonials have featured the dazzling chemistry of top local talent, combined with a group of international all-stars, that gives them a winning edge on the field. This season is no different as they can once again utilize the skills of last season’s top goal scorer, sophomore Denise Domena, who put 17 goals in the back of the net during the 2002 season. Unfortunately they have lost the talent of their 2002 captain Annelie Anderson, but Junior, Asa Birgersdotter and Senior, Jessica Coulon, who combined for 6 goals and 6 assists last season, will take over the role with authority. The 2002 team went 15-6 overall on their way to an ECAC championship and outscored their opponents by a total of 38 goals over the course of the season. They are a young team with an abundance of talent and a dedicated coaching staff who are sure to make their presence known on the field for many seasons to come.

Colonial Generals
Mark Dawson, a 1996 alumnus of Southampton Graduate Campus, begins his sixth season as head of the women's soccer team. Since 1995, Dawson also has served as assistant coach for men's soccer. Whether on the field with the men's or women's team, his knowledge of the sport has helped both squads find success. Dawson, 30, played midfield for the Colonials from 1992-94, and was a starter for Southampton College's 1994 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship team. A resident of Mastic, N.Y., he graduated in 1991 from William Floyd High School, where he now teaches Physical Education. "It's very gratifying to work for the same College and high school I attended," said Dawson, who received his M.A. in Physical Education from Hofstra University last year. "I'm able to give something back to both places.' He was named NYCAC Coach of the Year in 2001.

Mike LaCarrubba of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., is a fourth year assistant coach and 2000 graduate of Southampton Graduate Campus. He was a defender on the 1999 Colonials men's squad that made it to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. He earned a B.A. in Elementary Education at Southampton and an M.A. in Physical Education at Hofstra. He currently teaches Physical Education at William Floyd High School.
