Preparing to end great era with a NCAA bid
In the last season of a long successful era at Southampton Graduate Campus, the Colonials are aiming to end the program with its 2nd all time NCAA bid.
The Colonials last appearance at the big dance was in 1999 which ended in a heartbreaking quarterfinal with a quadruple over time loss to eventual national champion Southern Connecticut State.
Since then the team, despite a remarkable 52-12-8 record, have yet to make it to the national tournament.
Following the 2003 season, the Colonials set about putting together a 28 strong squad with 7 returnee starters and 13 squad players. Adding strength and depth are 15 newcomers all with impressive credentials.
Key returnees are co-captains Markus Persson and Adam Shearwood. Persson, an experienced midfielder will look to play a big role in central midfield, while Shearwood, a first team All-NYCAC midfield selection in 2003, will move down to play central defense.
Terence Liu, a speedy forward who earned NYCAC Rookie of the year last year and a spot on the 2nd All-NYCAC team, will look to grow into the teams leading offensive player.
Andreas Nilsson, an experienced collegiate player with a great physical presence, will look to strengthen the defensive unit along side Shearwood, while occasionally providing an offensive threat by playing up front.
Robin Olsson, a talented and skillful player, will continue being a key offensive weapon for the Colonials this year.
Returning in goal is Oskar Havas who looks set to be the number one choice in net this year.
Key returning defenders in 2004 are hardworking and technical player Mario Azzi, physical player Matti Lauren and four-year player Bill Step. The midfielders returning this year are Alle Farrohi, Martin Guss, and Terence Goin
Expected to make an immediate impact on midfield are Australian playmaker Adrian Papaluca, and Richard Dell, a great two way player. Mark Knowles is expected to play a big role on defense in his first year while Enda Crehan, Errol Ceyhen and Maciej Majerczak are potential offensive weapons this year.
Matt Pirozzi, Pat Meyer, Shemi Shlomo and Gary Easlick will compete for time on defense with John Incandela providing depth in goal.
