Women's Basketball 2003-04 Outlook
The 2002-03 Southampton Graduate Campus Women's Basketball team played consistently all season, chalking up their seventh playoff berth in nine years, and finishing with a well-earned 15-13 overall record, 14-10 in the conference. They played solid ball throughout the tough season and proved themselves, individually and team wise, as a force to be reckoned with in the NYCAC conference.
The Lady Colonials opened the 2002-03 season on a high note winning their first three games including a nail biter, a 76-74 victory at Queens College, where All-American guard Dani Thomas scored 26 points. Thomas would go on to score at least 25 points in a game 14 times over the course of the season, including doing so in all of her last nine games. In fact she was the high scorer in all but two of the Lady Colonials 28 games. The Lady Cols played good strong basketball throughout the remainder of the season, posting a 14-10 conference record, but lost to New Haven 73-84 in the quarter final round of the playoffs.
On the upside, the players on the floor proved themselves in many ways. The team as a whole led the NYCAC in blocked shots with 106 resulting in an average of 4.42 per game. The Lady Colonials ranked second overall in three point shooting, nailing 127 three pointers over the course of the season and an average of 5.29 per game. Among the thirteen teams that constitute the NYCAC Conference the Lady Colonials ranked in the top half in many other important categories. They ranked fourth in scoring, posting an average of 70.3 points per game, and amassing 1,688 points over the course of the season. They also finished fourth in free throw percentage with a season average of 70%. In field goal percentage and three-point percentage the Lady Colonials finished fifth, shooting 40% from the floor throughout the entire season and 33% from behind the arc. Read More...
