2003 Outlook

Men?s volleyball has had a short but storied run at Southampton Graduate Campus. Founded in 1989, the team has already won five titles. They are the only team at Southampton Graduate Campus that faces teams in all three NCAA divisions, including perennial powerhouse Penn State, 1998 Division I-II Final Four contender Princeton and 1999 Division III Final Four contender Juniata along with other big universities like Harvard, MIT and NYU. Some players have translated their Southampton Graduate Campus volleyball success into professional careers. Kyle Robinson (?98) stars on the US National Team. Mike Salak ('97) joined a pro team in Belgium. Salak has the Colonials career mark in kills (2305), service aces (318) and digs (837). Robinson's amazing .425 kill percentage also is a record. ?I have nothing but good things to say about Southampton Graduate Campus. The administration and faculty are wonderful, and who could deny that the location is amazing?? Robinson recently reflected. ?Being a part of an athletic team at Southampton was also a blessing. In my eyes, the athletic teams are the heart and soul of the school.?

COLONIAL GENERAL

Former Colonial John Lenihan has been hired as Southampton Graduate Campus?s newest men?s volleyball head coach.?I hired John for a number of reasons,? said athletic director Mary Topping. ?Primarily, he is in touch with the Long Island volleyball community, which will be valuable to him in his recruiting; and he went to Southampton Graduate Campus himself, so he is aware of the needs of his players on a day to day basis.? Lenihan, a 2001 graduate of the College, is a first-time coach, but already his players respect him and his talents. Senior co-captain Scott Schult, who also played with Lenihan for two seasons, said, ?He brings a lot of intensity and heart to the game. I know that he always gave 110 percent as a player and the team has already seen that devotion translate into his coaching.?

Lenihan picked 6?8 Peter Wawrzyniak as assistant coach, another former Colonial. Where Lenihan excelled in setting, Wawrzyniak was a strong middle blocker. In his junior year at Southampton, Wawrzyniak had 155 kills, 83 digs and 83 blocks. Lenihan feels that he chose the right person to be his assistant, because not only did the two of them play together for three years, Wawrzyniak also was the assistant coach for the Lady Colonials this past season.
