One of the great qualities of Shannon Owens has been her commitment to improving her game. She has worked hard each season since joining the Lady Colonials, and now the junior guard is ready to utilize the fruits of her efforts. "I'm looking for a solid contribution from both sisters this season," said Head Coach Jim Meyer. One thing that has impressed Meyer is the work ethic by the Owens sisters. "They've both been working hard in pre-season workouts," he added, "Between softball and basketball they've been doing double-duty." Owens, who came to Southampton following a heralded high school career, was a strong shooter at St. Gertrude High School in Virginia, where she averaged 14.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.3 steals per game. She also had a shooting percentage of 60 percent from the floor. In 1997-98, Owens was a Virginia All State selection, and finished her high school career with 1,024 points. One of three Lady Colonials who are two-sport athletes (Shannan Henley and her sister Robin are the others) Owens has also served as the starting catcher for the softball team. She sported a .969 fielding percentage with 118 putouts in 1999 and was fourth on the team in batting average in 2000. According to her former coach, Cindy Corwith, Shannon has worked hard since her freshman year. "She's gotten much stronger and we could count on her for solid singles and doubles," she said.
