A proven winner, Melanie McCollum will be striving to continue her athletic success for Southampton this season. Playing for championship teams in high school, AAU, and college, she will be among the leaders of the Lady Colonials this year.
"She's our leader on and off the court," said Head Coach Jim Meyer, "She's like our floor-general." McCollum's attributes include speed, leadership, and an intensity that breeds success on the court.
Last season McCollum shot 72 percent from the free-throw line and was third on the team with 42 steals. One of the fastest players on the Lady Colonials, she has been labeled as a true playmaker and a great defender.
During a standout career at Haldene High School in Cold Spring, NY, she was named All Section, All League, Sectional MVP, and a two-time All Star. She set the school record for assists, was named All League and All Section Honorable Mention for volleyball and player soccer.
McCollum played for Hudson Valley's 1997 gold medal-winning team at the Empire State Games, and from 1993-96 won four straight AAU Regional Championships.
