Sail Tall Ships:
If any of us thought we'd be broken into life at sea slowly, we were wrong!
As soon as we got aboard the Harvey Gamage our first day, El Gecko (one of
our small boats) had to be sanded and repainted, the anchor hauled and the
brass cleaned. After spending the night in St. Thomas we were off to St.
John, where we all got a taste of SEAmesters infamous hikes. We literally
hiked from one side of the island to the other. Roughly calculated we think
it turned out to be seven miles or so, but when half of it is uphill it sure
seems to be more. Later that day we ended up having our first snorkel
excursion. We saw a southern stingray, a sea turtle and one of my fellow
students is intent on catching his own lobsters for dinner some night.
Due to a shift in the winds we had to leave the Virgin Islands early, but we
ended up spending a suprise day on the island of Saba. I am in love with
the place. So clean, so beautiful and all the people were so friendly!
Okay, so the downside was that we had to walk up 1064 steps to the highest
peak on Mt. Scenery, but no words can describe the view or how proud of
myself I was that I pushed myself to complete the hike.
I am beginning to understand why alumni of hte progam say "this may be the
hardest thing you'll ever do, but it will be the most rewarding." And
although a fw of us have already paid our dues to King Neptune (aka
seasickness) we're all in good spirits and awaiting our next adventure.
