SEAmester Log, Part 3

Day 25 Aboard the Harvey Gamage: En Route to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

We have not seen land for four days, and we have not showered in 15 days. We are dirty, damp, and deprived of sleep. We are not amused.
Actually, despite the seemingly undesirable circumstances, we are in high spirits.
Last week the ship anchored off Mayreau, a small island in the Grenadines. We snorkeled over a shipwreck, and were nearly run over by some crazy tourists who wanted close-up footage of our excursion for their vacation video. We also had dinner with Father Mark DaSilva, and visited his church.
Early the next morning we set sail for Grenada, an island 100 miles off the coast of Venezuela, which is the southern most port ever visited by the Seamester Program! There we had our first knot tying competition. A watch ( Stacie, Juli, Annelie, Katie G., Jon, Nick, Sarah P., and Cindy )won the contest by 2 points and was rewarded by sleeping in while the other 2 watches completed the morning chores. The next morning, undaunted by the rain, we headed to the market in St. Georges. Each watch bargained for the items on their shopping lists and returned to the ship to prepare an island feast. After dinner we set out to get a taste of the natives night life. Some students (Mike, Juli, Jon, Annelie, Sara P., Stacie, Christina, and Aletta ) played bongos at an art gallery opening, while Katie T. and Erin H. defeated the locals in a rousing match of dominoes. On St. Patricks Day, we piled into a bus and took a guided tour of the island. The tour included a rainforest hike along steep and muddy paths leading to a waterfall. A few brave students (Juli, Mike, and Jon) plunged from the top of the falls. On the hike back to the bus, our "guide" led us astray for 2 hours and blamed it on one of our deckhands. Finally, we returned to the ship and prepared for our 4 day sail.
On our passage to Santo Domingo, we were reminded of the rigors of sailing. Quickly we fell into a watch, eat, class, try to sleep, watch...routine. On day 2 Bill and Annelie reeled in the first fish of our trip, a 47", 15 lb. Mahi-mahi. On day 3 we ate it for lunch! After lunch the same day we had a water festival on deck. We used our high powered fire hoses to soak and scrub everything and everyone on deck. When the "good clean fun" was over, we got underway and resumed our daily routine, greatly anticipating our arrival at Santo Domingo!
