Fax: (516) 283 4081Volunteers are being sought for WPBX 88.3 FM Long Island University Public Radio as its annual Spring Fund Drive goes underway from April 23 to May 5, 1999. This year's fund drive will coincide with the 100th birthday of jazz great Duke Ellington, on April 29. "This year's Spring Fund Drive is particularly special in light of the Duke Ellington theme and designated programming which celebrates the centennial of Ellington's birth," said Mary Foster, director of subscriber services. "As always, we are counting on our staff and loyal listeners to volunteer on the telephones to help us take pledges as we enter another great season with jazz music, the best of national public radio, and local news." Ms. Foster added that businesses interested in assisting the fund drive with gift certificates or special promotional offers will receive free on-air mentions of their donations as well as descriptions of their business and locations. "As part of Long Island University's public radio network, WPBX 88.3 is expanding its reach to 2.2 million people on Long Island and southern New England. This makes tying-in to our Spring Fund Drive a particularly lucrative opportunity for businesses, and a very rewarding experience for our listener-volunteers and supporters," she said. According to General Manager Wallace Smith, listeners tune in to WPBX 88.3 FM not only for the best in public radio but also for great music and local community connections. "We are an outstanding resource for Long Islanders and residents of southern New England, and we are proud that our local businesses also come to us as a promotional resource," said Smith. "Statistics show that nearly 90 percent of listeners feel positive about businesses which support public radio." Those interested in volunteering for or donating to the WPBX 88.3 FM Spring Fund Drive should contact Mary Foster, director of subscriber services for WPBX 88.3 FM, at (516) 287-8298; mfoster@southampton.liu.edu.
