Fax: (516) 283 4081Writers represented in the Spring 1999 edition of Proteus, the Southampton College literary magazine, will read from their works Thursday, April 29 at 8 p.m. at a reception honoring the publication of the magazine.
Novelist Kaylie Jones, and poet William Hathaway, both members of the College faculty, are among those who will read along with students and writers from the community. The public is invited to attend, and there is no charge for admission. Refreshments will be served.
Proteus showcases the writing talents of the students and faculty at the College as well as the members of the writing community at large. The spring edition contains poetry, essays, fiction and creative non-fiction by 27 writers from all over the country. The editor is Adam Penna of Water Mill, a 1998 graduate of Southampton College who is now enrolled in the College's Master of Fine Arts in Writing Program. Among the student writers in the journal are Chris Heaney, Annie Wade and Eiko Harada Vurdien.
With the launching of the new MFA in Writing program last summer, the College is becoming a nationally recognized center for writing. The College has received more than 1,500 inquiries about the new program. For information about the MFA in Writing, contact Noreen McKenna at 287-8200.
Publication of Proteus was supported in part by a special cultural opportunities grant from Southampton Town. The journal will be available for purchase at the reception. Writers interested in submitting work to the journal may read more about it at the web site, http://ssurfer1.liunet.edu/Proteus, or call Adam Penna at 537-9149.
