Fax: (516) 283 4081The following events are included in the 1999 Spring Semester Merit Fellows Honors Program lecture series at Southampton College of Long Island University. All lectures will be held in the Avram Theater.
Thursday, March 25, 9 PM Brain Cancer Treatment Dr. Jeff Coderre will discuss Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) a pioneering method for the treatment of brain cancer. This treatment, which is presently in clinical trials at Brookhaven National Laboratory, has not only extended the life expectancy of 49 patients, but also improved their overall quality of life. Dr. Coderre is a 1974 Southampton College alumnus, and the College's first of 32 Fulbright Fellowship recipients. Newsday recently featured Dr. Coderre's groundbreaking treatment for brain cancer in a two-page article.
Wednesday, March 31, 9 PM Sandy Rapp, folksinger, author, songwriter, and grassroots activist, conducts gay sensitivity training for police departments and has recounted her battles with the religious right in the book God's Country. Rapp's CD We The People, features 10 original feminist and gay issues songs which the magazine Out Sounds reviewed as "a superb and satiric collection in the best troubadour tradition." Gay Today's Jack Nichols called Rapp "positively Dylanesque." The lecture is co-sponsored by Allies, a club for gay, bisexual, homogender students and their friends at Southampton College.
Monday April 12, 5 PM Steve Miller is a local artist who explores the field where electronic culture and visual aesthetics intersect. Dreaming Brain, his interactive internet movie produced in association with Colin Goldberg, will be presented at exhibitions in Europe and Asia in conjunction with a traveling museum show titled DREAMWORKS: Twentieth Century Artistic and Psychological Perspectives. Monday, April 26, 9 PM Leon Jaroff, former senior editor and science editor of Time magazine and founder and first managing editor of Discover magazine, will talk about asteroids, comets, and catastrophes, past and present, suggesting that we are the first species that can prevent the next catastrophe. Jaroff is also one of the founders of CSICOP the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal, an international organization dedicated to exposing antiscience ("creation science" psychics, extraterrestrial, etc.,) trends in society and the media.
The Honors Program also organizes an annual trip to Broadway. This spring the play is Beauty and the Beast on Wednesday, April 21. Tickets, at $45, include the play, round trip fare on the Hampton Jitney, and a meal.
