Fax: (516) 283 4081Southampton, NY-- Since earning a degree in Communications from Southampton College of Long Island University in May, Chuck Zegarra of Ridgewood, NJ, has accomplished what local sports fans dream of-- regularly meeting the stars of the Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Giants and Jets.
Zegarra is completing a sports internship at Fox TV in New York, thanks to an arrangement by the College's Cooperative Education and Career Development Center.
Working with sports anchor Curt Menefee, and producers Lou Albanese and Sandy Cannold, Zegarra is frequenting the press boxes, locker rooms and television studios that casual fans never visit. After his internship concludes this month, he expects to find a permanent position somewhere in sports communications.
"Joining the sports media with Fox TV has been really exciting," said Zegarra, a two-sport college athlete. "In the beginning of my internship I was mostly editing video highlights, but now I'm getting the opportunity to get out in the field."
Zegarra earned a minor in Sports Administration at Southampton, one of the few colleges in the nation that offers the minor. "The program is a natural for student-athletes like Chuck," said Dr. Herb Sherman, Director of its Business Division. "Those who don?t enter the sports industry as players can get in through other avenues."
Zegarra joined the College in 1996 on a soccer scholarship, and played two years for coach Ed Goodhines. He also played two seasons of tennis for coach Chuck Hitchcock-- as a junior, he was team captain and the no. 1 singles player. Zegarra transferred from Bergen County CC, where he was a soccer captain for two years and twice was named a Division III All-State player.
When not playing for the Colonials, Zegarra often was on TV as the on-air voice for Southampton College sports, which aired locally on Cablevision. The broadcasts were produced via the College's expanding Arts and Media Division. A graduate of Ridgewood High School, Zegarra is the son of Rebecca Zegarra and the late Gustavo Zegarra of Ridgewood, NJ.
