Hot Lineup of Offerings Highlights "Summer By The Sea" at Southampton College

Southampton, NY -- Summer in The Hamptons means more than the beach, nightlife and hot sunny days. Southampton College of Long Island University has unveiled its "Summer By The Sea '99" program, a cornucopia of courses and workshops to make the season sizzle for people of all ages.

Undergraduate and graduate students can earn more credits, high school juniors and seniors can get a head start on college, adults seeking a new challenge can enroll in a plethora of intriguing non-credit courses, and children can enjoy a variety of day and sleepover camps.

"Summer By The Sea? has steadily grown each year, and the 1999 program is no exception. The learning experiences will include:

UNDERGRADUATE & GRADUATE CLASSES ( Sessions are May 4 to July 2; July 6 to Aug. 13)

Credit classes are available in Arts & Media, Business, Education, Gerontology, Humanities, Marine & Environmental Science, and Social Science. Southampton College's celebrated Marine and Environmental Science programs have produced 31 Fulbright Scholars in the past 24 years, a remarkable number for a small college.

MASTER WORKSHOPS IN THE ARTS

This is an exciting opportunity to create in workshops with today's most prominent artists, photographers, designers and ceramists who summer in The Hamptons.

Art: Past participants have included Robert Dash, Klaus Kertiss, Elaine deKooning, Roy Lichtenstein, Alfonso Ossorio and Larry Rivers. Ceramics (July and August): Call 516-287-8427 for details. Photography (July): Experience the past, present and future of photography. During each of the four weeks of the workshop, different topics will be covered through a series of one-credit courses.

WRITING

MFA Program in English & Writing: This innovative, acclaimed program, now in its second year, offers a variety of courses for new and continuing graduate students. Two summer sessions will feature courses taught by author/journalist/commentator Roger Rosenblatt, poet Kit Hathaway, novelist Robert Reeves and other noted writers. The James Jones Literary Society 1999 Annual Symposium (Saturday, June 26): Norman Mailer, William Styron, Budd Schulberg, Betty Comden and others will discuss their personal friendship with James Jones. Admission is free. 24th Annual Summer Writers Conference (Wed., June 30 to Friday, July 9): This conference allows writers of all genres to study and discuss writing. The conference offers a Reading/Lecture series, as well as 8-day workshops with prominent writers of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. The Reading/Lecture series will focus on the topic, "What's Wrong With American Writing?"

4TH ANNUAL SUMMER INSTITUTE ON AGING (June 3 to July 7)

The S.I.A will address the issue of "opportunity" as the U.S. population ages and the field of gerontology increases in importance. Students can complete a Master's or graduate certificate in Gerontology via a new "long distance learning" program.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
