Southampton, NY -- The women's softball program at Southampton College of Long Island University begins its 18th season this week with five newcomers and seven returnees from last year's roster.

The Lady Colonials, who open each season with a road trip to Florida, began their 1999 schedule on March 14-19, facing ten opponents at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando. Southampton's first home game will be played Sunday, March 28 at 1 pm vs. Binghamton.

To qualify for the playoffs and one of the top six spots in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Lady Colonials must keep their 12-person roster healthy.

"We can put out a real solid starting lineup," said Cindy Corwith of Water Mill, who enters her seventh season has head coach. "With the quality innings we expect from our new pitchers, our goal is to get back to the NYCAC tournament. We have versatility but not a lot of depth, so we can't afford any injuries."

Last year, Southampton College finished 5-25 (4-16 in NYCAC, 9th place).

The senior captains of the 1999 Lady Colonials are Mary Jackson of St. James, NY, one of the NYCAC's top second basemen, and Angie Kuch of Webberville, MI, who will finish her career catching and playing third base.

Their fellow seniors include: Christine Curry of East Lyme, CT, who plays both designated hitter and some infield; Lissa O'Connell of Canandaigua, NY, last season's starting rightfielder; and Trina Yantz of Marlboro, NY, the starting centerfielder who has led the club in stolen bases twice in the past three years.

The junior returnees are: Jillian Bird of Roslyn Heights, NY, who will see most of her time in the outfield; and Stacia Semo of Carthage, NY, a shortstop/outfielder who also stars for the Lady Colonials soccer team.

Five new faces join Southampton College: Freshman Robin Cate of Houston, TX, will be one of two pitchers on the squad; she also enjoyed a strong season as the College's soccer goalkeeper. Freshmen Robin Owens and Shannon Owens of Richmond, VA, are identical twins who recently completed their first season on the basketball team. Robin will see time at first base, while Shannon handles catching duties.

Lora Scarson of East Syracuse, NY, is a freshman first baseman. Kristen Bartoldus of Ridge, NY, will handle the bulk of the pitching duties, and will see time at first base; Bartoldus is a junior transfer from Barry University.

Yantz, Robin Owens and Shannon Owens recently ended their basketball season by winning the College's second straight East Coast Athletic Conference Division II championship.

Assistant Coach Jacki Paton of Hampton Bays begins her eighth season on the softball staff. Debuting as assistant coaches are: Cassie Arroyo of Bayport, NY, a catcher/pitcher who finished her playing career in 1998 and is one of the best players in Southampton history; and Kristina Katori of Charlton, MA, who holds the same position with the Lady Colonials basketball program. Kim Stahl of Ronkonkoma, NY, will serve as statistician.

All games are free and open to the public. For a complete women's softball schedule call 516-287-8386, or visit the College's web site at www.southampton.liu.edu.
