Michael Disher, director of the Southampton College community theater group, Southampton Players, has announced the 1999-2000 schedule and invites auditions for the season's opening engagement: William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The classic Shakespearean comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream, still maintains its brilliance, bite, and wit after 400 years. Most recently, this quintessential fantasy of love, lust, and dreams was featured in the summer movie release starring Calista Flockhart, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kevin Kline, and in the Royal Shakespeare Company's current video release. Performances will be held on November 11-14 and 18- 20 in the Avram Theater at Southampton College January brings InterAct, which will focus on original material submitted by students participating in Southampton College's BFA and MFA programs. Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, January 28 and 29, and February 4 and 5. This 4th annual one-act play festival will be presented in black box format. Guys and Dolls will fit the playbill nicely as the spring 2000 musical. Music and lyrics were written by Frank Loesser, based upon the Damon Runyon story and characters. The book was written by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. Guys and Dolls features such hit numbers as "Luck Be a Lady Tonight", "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat", "Take Back Your Mink", "Fugue for Tinhorns", and "A Bushel and a Peck". Guys and Dolls is a New York City story of love, money, and salvation. The action centers on gambler Nathan Detroit who must win a bet from the slick high roller, Sky Masterson, or "Nathan's Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game" will be forced to fold. Nathan bets that Sky will not be able to take the starchy Salvation Army doll Sarah to Havana with him. Sarah finds the rakish Sky very resistible at first, but eventually melts and accompanies him to Cuba, while Nathan almost loses his fiancée of 14 years, the psychosomatic showgirl Miss Adelaide. In the end, the Dolls get the Guys and all ends merrily. All evening performances will begin at 8 PM. Admission to A Midsummer Night's Dream and InterAct will be $10 for adults and $6 for seniors and students. Admission to the musical, Guys and Dolls, will be $12 for adults and $8 for seniors and students. Group rates are available. Schools or organizations interested in booking matinee performances for any of the three productions are encouraged to call Michael Disher at (516) 287-8088, who can answer questions about the productions, Southampton Players, or the Southampton College Arts and Media Program.
