Petty, currently on the charts with the single "Room At The Top," is known for hits such as "Free Fallin," "Mary Jane's Last Dance," "American Girl" and "You Wreck Me."
The fast-selling VIP tickets provide reserved front-row seating and admission to a private pre-concert party in a tent adjacent to the stage. There, VIPs enjoy food and drink supplied by the East End's finest restaurants and caterers. Co-chairs of this year's benefit are College Chancellor Robert F.X. Sillerman, his wife, Laura Baudo Sillerman, and Ron Perelman, CEO of Revlon.
A limited number of VIP tickets, starting at $300, are available at 516-299-4090. In addition, alumni ticket sales are expected to match last year's high.
General admission tickets at $40 are still available on a cash-only basis at Long Island Sound in Southampton (283-6683) and East Hampton (324-2660); the College Bursar's Office (Mon. to Fri., 10 am-4 pm); Lynn's Card Shop in Westhampton Beach (288-1312); and at TicketMaster (516-888-9000 or 212-307-7171). For details call the concert hotline at 516-287-8375 or visit the All For The Sea web site at www.liu.edu/all4sea.
The last two All For The Sea performances have concluded with a surprise guest. In 1997, James Taylor invited Jimmy Buffett onstage for an encore rendition of "Mexico." In 1998, Rod Stewart let Perelman sit in on drums for an encore of "We're Havin' A Party." There is no word yet on whether Petty will continue this tradition.
Another All For The Sea tradition is the growing celebrity presence in the VIP tent. In recent years, notables such as Kelsey Grammer, super model Rachel Hunter, Peter Jennings, Lorne Michaels, Bill Beutel and actress Kelly Lynch have been in attendance.
Gates open at 5 p.m. for the outdoor concert on the College's athletic field.
