Fax: (516) 283 4081Southampton -- The men's lacrosse team at Southampton College of Long Island University, which this month began its 21st season, upset Dowling College 13-10 today to bring its record to 1-0 in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC), and 2-3 overall.
Bryan Davis scored three goals and Robert Roddini and Rich Stoia added two each for unranked Southampton, which has won seven consecutive games against Dowling (4-2, fourth-ranked in Division II).
The Colonials, who have won two East Coast Athletic Conference Division II championships, were ranked 10th in the pre-season Div. II poll. A win in their next game-- a home contest vs. Albany on April 3 at 3 p.m.-- might vault them into a Top 10 ranking.
"We've lost a couple close games this season, so it's great to finally show we can compete against the top teams," said head coach Ralph Pepe of East Quogue, who entered the season with a 44-31 career record. "If we continue to get strong goaltending and play well together, we should have some success."
Pepe, who guided Southampton to ECAC titles in 1995 and 1997, is relying on a 19-man roster as he shoots for a third championship:
Sharing the captaincy are: Larry Falkman of Lake Ronkonkoma, NY, a sophomore goalie who was named to NYCAC All-Rookie Team; and senior attack Robert Roddini of Levittown, NY, who led the team in scoring last season with 15 goals and 21 assists.
Other seniors on the team are Bryan Davis, an attackman from East Northport, NY, and midfielder Charles Masterson of St. James, NY.
Junior classmen are: Tom Dunn, an attackman from Shirley, NY; Jason Farrell of Queens, NY, a defender/midfielder; midfielder Mike LaCarrubba of Ronkonkoma, NY; Jim Laura of Kings Park, NY, who plays defense and midfield; midfielder Desmond Megna of Mastic, NY; goalie Anthony Messina of Shoreham; attackman Ken Monz of Rocky Point, NY; Joe Paluseo of Cazenovia, NY, who plays midfield/attack; midfielder Rich Stoia of Shirley, NY; and defender Marvin Suria-Ramos of Port Washington, NY.
The sophomore players are: defender Nathan Dumdei of Colo, IA; and midfielder/ attack Chris Schiefer of Holtsville, NY.
Three freshmen are new to the Southampton College roster: defender Tim Harder of Saco, ME; midfielder/attack Matt Melius of West Hartford, CT; and midfielder Matt Schreiner of Palatine, IL.
Pepe's staff for 1999 includes assistant coach Blayney McEneaney of Miller Place, NY, who joins the club for a fifth straight year, and Christian Zarcone of Smithtown, NY, who begins his second season as student assistant. Zarcone, a former Colonials midfielder and captain, was an All-American and All-NYCAC selection during his career.
Team managers will be Dawn Wiley, a sophomore from Buffalo, NY, Paula Muellner, a freshman from Rochester, NY, and Kara Cloth.
