Fax: (631) 283 4081In a triple-overtime nailbiter, the Southampton College men's soccer team beat East Stroudsburg 2-1 in the NCAA "Sweet Sixteen" Division II Tournament on Saturday. It was the Colonials' first entry into the tourney since men's basketball in 1972.
Southampton's offense dominated, outshooting East Stroudsburg 29-7. While the Warriors' strategy was to shut down 21-goal scorer Johan Kron, Colonial Desmond Megna was able to slip through twice, scoring both goals. Each time he was assisted by Andreas Lindberg.
Over 600 people attended the game, overflowing the stands and lining both sidelines. After Megna's game-winner, players piled on top of him near the goal. The team is coached by Ed Goodhines (Class of '83), who earlier in the week was named NYCAC Coach of the Year.
NYCAC Player of the Year is Kron. He is also the Colonials' all-time leading scorer with 59 career goals. The Colonials are 16-0-2, ranking them No. 1 in the Northeast and No. 2 nationally in Division II.
An "Elite Eight" game vs. No. 1 Southern Connecticut State is on Sunday, November 21, at 1 p.m. in Willowbrook Park in New Britain, Connecticut. "Southampton and Southern Connecticut are the top-ranked teams in the country," Goodhines said. "So the team that wins Sunday will be favored to go all the way."
Southern Connecticut (17-0) earned its fifth National Championship in 1998, tying the Owls with Seattle Pacific as the teams with the most titles. The Owls currently have a 23-game unbeaten streak, the longest in Division II. Southampton is the only other undefeated Division II team in the country.
Southampton ended Southern Connecticut State's 56-game win streak last year. The Owls are looking for revenge.
Powered by Kron's 3.13 points per game, Southampton has the country's No. 5 scoring offense. The Owls bank on their No. 1 defense, allowing just .310 goals a game.
