Southampton, NY -- A diverse Evening Degree program at Southampton College of Long Island University will begin with the fall 1999 semester, allowing a growing number of non-traditional students from Long Island to pursue their dream of a higher education.

The expanded academic schedule came to fruition because of community demand, the College's expanding graduate/undergraduate offerings, and "Chancellors Hall," an impressive $10 million academic center that opened in Sept. 1998.

"The Evening Program is a logical step in our recent growth," said Timothy Bishop, Southampton College Provost. "We can now better serve Long Island residents who need night and weekend classes to take advantage of our academic programs. Chancellors Hall answered our need for classroom space and made this possible."

Four undergraduate bachelors degrees can be earned through the expanded evening and weekend schedule: B.A. in Business, B.A. in Liberal Studies (Social Science/Business), B.S. in Business, and B.S. in Accounting. Evening sessions are already in existence for three graduate programs-- Education, Gerontology and Writing.

Students who possess an associate degree can earn their bachelor's in two or three years of fall, spring and summer study. Those who have attained up to three years of study at a four-year college or university may transfer up to 98 credits, and earn a Southampton degree in one or two years.

Southampton's schedule expansion is an endeavor that goes beyond the classroom. As a result, the College will also broaden its food service operation, book store hours, administrative services, academic computing and more. This will enable many working people and Long Island residents to enjoy many of the academic options and services once limited to traditional "on-campus" students.

"I wanted to pursue an undergraduate degree without sacrificing my full-time job," said Joanne Sendlenski of Southampton, a senior Business major who works as a phlebotomist at Portamedic in Hauppauge. "There's a big need for flexible schedules, especially with people who live on the East End. I work 40 hours a week, so I need to have options with my academic schedule. That's why I find Southampton convenient."

One of the offerings in the new evening program will be Certified Financial Planner, one of the fastest growing job opportunities in the financial services industry.

The CFP program meets the need for trained professionals who can plan and assess a client's financial future. Financial service experts will serve as faculty and give the latest information in planning areas such as insurance, investments, tax planning, retirement planning, estate planning and employee benefits. Initial classes will include "Introduction to Personal Financial Planning" (on Tuesdays) and "The Financial Planning Process" (on Wednesdays).
