Southampton NY --- Dr. Margaret E. Madden has been appointed Dean for Academic Affairs at Southampton College of Long Island University. Dr. Michael E. Arons, Long Island University's Vice-President for Academic Affairs, made the announcement this week.

Dr. Madden comes to Southampton from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where since 1993 she has served as Associate Dean of the Faculty and Professor of Psychology. In 1998 she served as Acting Dean of the Faculty at Lawrence for eight months following the sudden death of her predecessor.

An advocate of liberal arts education, Dr. Madden is expected to help the Southampton College faculty advance its long-term plan for academic excellence. The plan commits the College to building curriculum strengths around local needs and local resources, focusing on four "lead" programs: Marine and Environmental Science, Environmental Studies and Psychobiology, Writing, and Visual Arts.

In her 12 years as a college administrator, Madden has played a key role in faculty development issues, including developing and administering a new fourth-year tenure review of faculty members. She is also deeply committed to the importance of gender and ethnic diversity inclusiveness in the curriculum. She chaired a task force on integrating women's experiences into the undergraduate psychology curriculum for the American Psychological Association's Division of the Psychology of Women, and co-edited a special issue of Psychology of Women Quarterly on the topic last spring.

Her research interests are related to the psychology of gender, and she recently studied women's reactions to pregnancy loss and their responses to victimization. While at Lawrence, Dr. Madden obtained faculty research grants to support research on reproductive events, including a grant from the Jaspar and Marion Whiting Foundation. In 1997 she was elected a fellow of the American Psychological Association.

Dr. Madden previously was Professor of Psychology and Assistant to the Academic Vice President at Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, New Hampshire. She holds a BA in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin and an MS and Ph. D. in Social Psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

"Dr. Madden brings to Southampton College a steadfast commitment to the liberal arts and sciences," said Arons. "I anticipate that her appointment will help the faculty and staff execute their plan for making Southampton College a nationally-recognized residential undergraduate liberal arts college."

Dr. Madden explained that she is eager to join the faculty at Southampton because the college reflects her own leadership style of collegiality, team-building, and collaboration. She and her husband have two children and live in Sag Harbor. ###
