Helmo Hernandez, President of the Havana-based Ludwig Foundation of Cuba, will present a lecture on the current state of Cuban art and artists Tuesday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Southampton College of Long Island University. The event, a first for the East End of Long Island, will take place in Duke Lecture Hall in Chancellors Hall and is free and open to the public.

The visit by Hernandez, grew out of a documentary project on Cuban film and video makers undertaken by Southampton College Communications Professor John Reilly. In a recent catalogue of the Ludwig Foundation, Hernandez stated, "it is amazing to see how intensely these artists have involved themselves with their creative work under difficult circumstances."

The Ludwig Foundation is one of Cuba's leading institutions devoted to the promotion of Cuban artists and responding to the enormous economic difficulties in this island nation.

"It's remarkable to see the range and creative spirit of Cuban artists working with little or no materials but producing incredible work," said Professor Reilly.

The event is sponsored by the Arts and Media Division and the Honors Program of Southampton College. For more information, call Paul Eastup, Chairman of the Arts and Media Division, 516-283-4000.
