Dr. Scott Carlin, Asst. Professor of Environmental Studies and Geography at Southampton College of Long Island University, was recently invited (Dec. 1998) to represent Long Island at the "Breast Cancer Clusters Workshop" held in Boston and sponsored by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services' Office of Women's Health. The conference brought together scientists and activists from around the country to define, examine, and address new approaches to investigating and responding to areas with high rates of breast cancer. Dr. Carlin's presentation, entitled "Mapping Community Breast Cancer Rates: New Designs and Approaches" summarized the work he has been doing with Long Island breast cancer groups. These groups are investigating how Geographic Information Systems can most effectively be used to analyze the spatial distribution of local breast cancers. Dr. Carlin, a resident of Hampton Bays, has been teaching at Southampton College for six years and is co-founder of Long Island University's Institute for Sustainable Development.
