Southampton, NY -- The women's volleyball team at Southampton College of Long Island University, which this month opened its 20th season, upped its overall record to 7-8 after defeating Molloy College (15-9, 16-14, 13-15, 15-12) on Sept. 30.

Kevin DesLauriers of Southampton, a 1993 graduate of Southampton College, begins his fifth season as head coach of the team.

"We're a solid team, much stronger than in the past few years," said DesLauriers, whose squad is 2-0, good for third place in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference. The top six of 12 NYCAC teams make the playoffs. "Our three recruits have made a huge difference."

The Lady Colonials, who last season finished fifth in NYCAC with a 4-5 record, (9-24 overall), have four returnees on their roster:

Julie Cullum, a senior middle blocker from Orchard Park, NY, will serve as captain for the second straight year.

Three juniors return to the Lady Colonials: Laura Bonner of Greene, NY, an outside hitter, finished second last season with 274 assists and 21 blocked shots. Leah Miller, a setter/opposite hitter from Langhorne, PA, led the '97 squad with 552 assists. Kristy Nelmes of North Bellmore, NY, a junior middle blocker, led Southampton with 305 kills, 890 attempts, 116 games played, and was second with 33 service aces and 232 digs.

The three new faces on the team include: freshman Ginny Harding of Chester, VA; freshman setter Brooke Obad of Hamburg, NY, who had 71 assists in the win over Molloy; and middle blocker Cara Pekarcik of Herminie, PA, a junior transfer from Juniata (PA) College.

Scott Gleason of Hampton Bays, an '86 alumnus of Southampton College, will serve as Assistant Coach for a 3rd straight season. Paul Kies of Cheektowaga, NY, who has played for the College's men's volleyball team, debuts as Student Assistant Coach.
