Diverse Issues Discussed in Merit Fellow Lectures at Southampton College

Southampton, NY -- Art, science and music are some of the subjects that will be presented at the Merit Fellow Lecture Series this spring at Southampton College of Long Island University.
The lectures, all of which take place in the College's Fine Arts Theatre, are free and open to the public.
On Thursday, April 23, the Honors Program will host a trip to the Broadway musical Chicago. Tickets are $50, which includes food, beverages, transportation on the Hampton Jitney (leaving at 5 p.m.), and admission to the show.

- Thursday, February 19, 9 pm
DR. BILL DONALDSON, Marine Biologist from the Alaska Department of Fisheries and Game, will present a talk and slide show of Alaska's marine environment. For 25 years, he has studied commercially important crustaceans, specifically Tanner and Red King Crabs.- Monday, February 23, 9 pm
DR. BRIAN O'DOHERTY, a distinguished artist who paints under the name Patrick Ireland, gives a lecture titled "Making Art." O'Doherty recently joined Southampton College as University Professor of Fine Arts and Media. For 19 years he was Director of Film, Radio and Television at the National Endowment for the Arts. He also is a former art critic for The New York Times.- Monday, March 2, 7 pm
ZACK DANZIGER, composer and high school music teacher in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant section, will sing from his two CD?s, Songs for Children and Jazz Tunes and Love Songs.- Wednesday, April 1, 6:30 pm
WALLACE BROECKER, Prof. of Chemical Oceanography at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, discusses the current debate on global warming and climate changes as a result of increasing greenhouse gases.- Tuesday, April 28, 5 pm
DR. CHRIS LINGLE, Professor of Political Economy at Case Western Reserve University, will discuss "Asian Values." He was forced to flee Singapore in 1994 after publishing a letter interpreted as critical of the Singaporean judiciary. Dr. Lingle recently authored The Rise and Decline of the Asian Century: False Starts on the Path to the Global Millennium.- Thursday, April 30, 9 pm
DR. STEVEN DEMCHUCK, a forensic chemist for the Drug Enforcement Agency, presents a lecture titled "Adventure, Intrigue, Interdiction, Travel, Law, Forensic Sciences... This Is The DEA." The 1976 Southampton College alumnus will discuss DEA intelligence, laboratory investigations, analysis of controlled substances, and career opportunities in federal agencies.- Tuesday, May 5, 7:30 pm
THE Southampton College CHOIR presents a musical performance entitled "Echoes of the Spirit." The 30-member ensemble will perform selections in classical, vocal jazz, and African-American spirituals. Also featured will be an Honors soloist from the Southampton College class, "The Singing Voice."
