Southampton, NY -- Timothy Bishop, Provost of Southampton College of Long Island University, has announced that the Fine Arts Theater will be named the Avram Theater and that all the gallery space in the Fine Arts Building will be included in the current name, "Avram Family Galleries."

The theater is being renamed for Dr. Morrell Michael Avram in recognition of significant support from the Avram family for the past 15 years.

"We are delighted to have such a prominent community member expand his association with the College," said Provost Bishop. "Thanks to the Avrams' contributions we will be able to renovate the theater and make it a greater asset to the College and the community."

The 440-seat theater offers a broad spectrum of presentations, including concerts, operas, theater productions by Southampton Players, Pianofest recitals, many community meetings including the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, and World Affairs Council lectures, which have brought distinguished speakers such as former UN Ambassador Bill Richardson to Southampton.

Dr. Avram, a resident of Southampton and Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., is a 1951 graduate of Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus. He and his wife, Maria, have five children: Rella, Marc, Eric, Mathew and David.

University President David Steinberg added that Dr. Avram "is a distinguished medical leader with broad interests in world affairs and cultural events-- he enriches both the College community and the East End."

As Chief of the Division of Nephrology at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, and founding director of the Avram Center for Kidney Disease, Dr. Avram's accomplishments in the field of artificial organs have helped make nephrology a clinical specialty. He has published three books and written over 100 peer reviewed scientific articles in the field of kidney disease.

"I hope my support of Long Island University over the years will reflect my intent to help educate our young people and to show my appreciation for the people in the communities in which we live," said Dr. Avram.

In 1988, Dr. Avram earned an honorary Doctorate of Science from Southampton College. In 1985, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University's Brooklyn Campus. He is a member of the Board of Governors of St. Luke-Roosevelt Hospital and The Long Island College Hospital, co-chairman of theWorld Affairs Council, and a board member of Pianofest.
