(SOUTHAMPTON, NY) -- Dave Krasnow, a successful patent and trademark attorney at The Bell Seltzer Intellectual Property Law Group of Alston & Bird in Raleigh, North Carolina, will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award at Southampton Colleges' 32nd annual commencement ceremonies on May 17.
Krasnow earned a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Southampton College in 1982. The college is part of the multi-campus Long Island University, which is the eighth largest private university in the nation.
Krasnow credits his chemistry degree with giving him the technical experience to handle the hundreds of patent applications he has written in his career.
During his 1991-94 tenure with Bausch & Lomb in Rochester, New York, Krasnow helped secure patents on contact lenses and laser techniques to sculpt lenses. In private practice, he has handled everything from turbine engines to medical packaging and organ preservation devices.
After graduating from Southampton College, Krasnow served as assistant clerk to the U.S. Supreme Court for several years. In 1988, he graduated from George Mason University's School of Law.
Krasnow worked as an associate at Ginsburg, Feldman & Bress in Washington, D.C. from 1987 to 1991, followed by his tenure at Bausch & Lomb. From 1994 to 1997, he was a senior associate at Nixon, Hargrave, Devans & Doyle, and at Cumpston & Shaw, both in Rochester, where he handled complex chemical and mechanical patent applications.
In 1997, Provost Timothy Bishop named Krasnow president of the Southampton College Alumni Association. "The Southampton experience is responsible for giving me the credentials and perspective I needed to achieve many successes in my life. I will always be grateful," he said.
Krasnow is a past board member and corresponding secretary for the Rochester Intellectual Property Law Association (RIPLA), the YMCA Regional Board, and the Monroe Community College Foundation Board.
He lives in Raleigh with his wife, Ann Marie, and two children: John, 8, and Meghan, 6.
Long Island University President David Steinberg, Chancellor Robert F.X. Sillerman and Provost Tim Bishop will honor Krasnow at an 11:00 a.m. pre-commencement brunch at the Publick House in Southampton. Starting at 2:00 p.m., Dr. Steinberg will confer degrees upon 274 undergraduates and 23 graduate students.
