Southampton, NY -- Beginning this fall, Internet surfers can participate in college courses from the comfort of their own living room.

There are no classrooms for two new non-credit courses in "Word Processing" and "Electronic Spreadsheet Usage" being taught through the Internet by the School of Continuing Studies at Southampton College of Long Island University.

Anyone with access to a computer with a modem, the Internet and the popular software programs involved-- Word 97 and Excel 97-- can join these two new courses, starting in October.

This post-modern method of teaching is described in academic circles as "Distance Learning."

Anyone interested in these courses should contact Paula Godfrey in the School of Continuing Studies at 516-287-8316. The web site for Southampton College can be visited at www.southampton.liu.edu.

Students will order textbooks at the campus bookstore (the same books used in many of the regular credit classes on campus). Each of the two textbooks comes with a diskette that contains many of the projects for the course. For other special projects, instructors will e-mail files.

Each course project has a quiz, which the students will complete and e-mail to their instructors. The instructor's response to the work submitted and answers to any questions will be returned to the students on a next day, 24-hour basis. A student, therefore, could complete the project course as quickly as one week, or take the eight weeks allocated. A link to America Online is suggested to allow for easy e-mail communications.

A certificate will be sent to students completing the courses.
