- Lewis Greenstein has been appointed Acting Academic Dean of Southampton College replacing Wayne Miller who has stepped down to take a job as Senior Fellow at the American Council on Education.
Dr. Greenstein, who assumed his new duties as Academic Dean on August 17, will continue to serve as Director of the Friends World Program at the College, a position he has held since 1993.
As director of the Friends World Program, Dr. Greenstein's leadership has more than doubled the enrollment and brought national recognition to the program for its unique qualities and fine academics. Friends World, a program of global education for social change, sends students to live and study in seven overseas centers.
"Given his accomplishments and dedication to higher education and the University, I am confident that Southampton College will have excellent academic leadership during this transition period," said Michael Arons, Long Island University Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Dr. Greenstein, a former Fulbright Scholar in Kenya, has had a broad and varied career in education since earning his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1975. Immediately prior to joining the College, he created the design for a new residential undergraduate college to serve persons between the ages of 45 and 64 for the Association for Mid-Life Education, Inc., in Washington, D.C. He also served as Program Manager for the Commission on National and Community Service, Director of University Relations for the U.S. Peace Corps, and Assistant Dean and Assistant Professor at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA. He is a fluent speaker of Swahili and maintains an active scholarly interest in African history. He lives in Remsenburg with his wife, Susan, and their daughter, Sara, a 1998 graduate of Southampton College.
