Celebrate Southampton College Day Scheduled for October 17

- Seminars and lectures by faculty and staff, tours of the new Academic Center, sports events, and computer and art demonstrations will all be part of "Celebrate Southampton College Day" Saturday October 17.
The public is invited to join the college community in this day of activities highlighting the College's cultural and academic resources and offering a chance to interact with faculty and learn about their research and special programs.
Participants will also be able to tour "Chancellors Hall," the new $10 million academic center which was formally dedicated on September 25. The building houses computer and science laboratories, classrooms, the 150-seat Duke Lecture Hall (home of the World Affairs Council), and space for studios for WPBX, 88.3 FM.
"We invite everyone to join us in celebrating Southampton College and the vital role it plays in the intellectual life of our community," said Tim Bishop, Provost. "The new academic center will not only enhance our curriculum, but it will also be a place for the community to use and enjoy."
The day's activities begin at 10 a.m. with open houses and tours of the College's Marine Station on Shinnecock Bay and the Friends World Program of global studies and travel abroad. A series of workshops, seminars and lectures by faculty and staff will take place from 11 am - 4 pm and include an environmental issues lecture on The Big Houses, Golf Courses, Barrier Beaches and Coastal Ecology by Professor Bob DeLuca, Director of Group For The South Fork. Other sessions include a drawing workshop in the Munford Studio with Art Professor Neill Slaughter; a Marine Mammals Workshop with Psychobiology Professor Paul Forestell; a virtual tour of the college through its website with physics professor and webmaster Arvind Borde; presentations on travel courses such as "SEAmester," Tropical Marine Biology and "Australearn" and a business workshop on consumer behavior entitled ŗThe Buying Sneakers Case˛ by Professor Herbert Sherman. Presentations will also be given on the Collegešs extensive internship and cooperative education opportunities.
Tours of the campus will take place throughout the day, and faculty will be on hand from 9 a.m. to noon in the Avram Galleries.
The women's soccer team will play Philadelphia Textiles College at noon, and the menšs soccer team will play Dowling College at 2 p.m. All events during the day are free. A concert by the headliner band "Sister Soleil" and "Getaway Cruiser" featuring techno-pop/electronica music, is open to the public for $10 a ticket and begins at 9 p.m. in the Avram Theater.
