Southampton, NY -- The legendary Rod Stewart will perform a special benefit concert on Monday, July 20, 1998, at 7 p.m. on the athletic fields of Southampton College of Long Island University.

NOTE: This concert was held in 1998. To find out about this year's concert, check out http://www.liu.edu/all4sea and be careful to check the date. We update that page as soon as we have official word.

Proceeds from the performance, the eighth in a series of All For The Sea events, will benefit Marine and Environmental Science scholarships at the College.

Stewart is expected to perform material spanning his entire three decade-plus career, including songs from his latest Warner Bros. Records release, When We Were The New Boys, which is being hailed as his most engaging and enthralling work in decades.

An East End summer tradition since 1992, the seven previous All For The Sea concerts have raised in excess of one million dollars for Marine Science scholarships at the College. The Marine and Environmental Sciences programs at the college are nationally known for their excellence and have produced 28 Fulbright Scholars, a Marshall Scholar and a Udall Scholar in the last 23 years.

"We are proud to welcome Rod Stewart to Southampton College to headline this summer's All For The Sea concert," said Robert F.X. Sillerman, Chancellor of the College. "We expect him to follow in the tradition of the previous two sold-out shows by James Taylor and Jimmy Buffet for the benefit of the environment, and to entertain our neighbors."

General admission tickets at $40 on a cash-only basis go on sale Saturday, June 6 at 10 am at: Long Island Sound in Southampton (283-6683) and East Hampton (324-2660); The Westhampton Beach Music Experience (288-4385), the College's Enrollment Service office Monday to Friday from 10 am-4 pm, and at Ticketmaster, 516-888-9000 or 212-307-7171. For information call the Concert Hotline at 516-287-8375 or visit the All For The Sea web site at http://www.liunet.edu/but01/new/special/forsea/allsea.html.

A limited number of VIP tickets at benefit prices provide reserved front-row seating and parking. VIPs are admitted to a private pre-concert party in a tent adjacent to the stage where guests enjoy food, wines and beer from the East End's finest restaurants and caterers.

For VIP tickets, to advertise in the souvenir journal, or for a special alumni ticket package at $65, call 516-287-8348.

All tickets are advance purchase only, and none will be sold at the gate. Alcoholic beverages and coolers, cans, bottles and recording devices are prohibited. Food and beverages will be sold, and concert-goers should bring a blanket or beach chair.

Stewart's new release, When We Were The New Boys, is peppered with cover versions of Oasis' "Cigarettes And Alcohol," Primal Scream's "Rocks," as well as songs penned by Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, and Ron Sexsmith. The first single is an update of "Ooh La La" by The Faces, with whom his career blossomed from 1970-75.

"I didn't go into this project consciously trying to recreate the past," said Stewart, who produced his own album for the first time in two decades. "But I did want to capture some of the spirit and the fun I had making records like Every Picture Tells A Story."

Born Roderick David Stewart in North London, England on January 10, 1945, he was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. He earned the Grammy's Living Legend Award in 1990, and nominations for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1989 and 1991. In 1990, Stewart married model Rachel Hunter. They have a daughter, Renee (6), and a son, Liam (3).

The All For The Sea concerts began in 1992 with Crosby, Stills & Nash, followed by Tina Turner (1993), Foreigner and the Doobie Brothers (1994), Tony Bennett (1995), The Allman Brothers (1996), Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band (1996) and James Taylor and his Band (1997).
