Southampton, NY -- The works of Yolanda Daliz and Wendy Young, 1982 graduates of Southampton College of Long Island University, will be on view in the Robert Munford Alumni Invitational art exhibit from September 22 to October 24 in the College's Fine Arts Gallery.
A reception for the artists will be held Friday, Oct. 17, from 5-7 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, noon to 5 p.m. For information call (516) 287-8427.
Yolanda Daliz of Rochester, N.Y., explains her art as "an explosion of colors and emotions." Her work includes a relief wall sculpture, and a free-standing sculpture made of wood, clay, acrylic and found objects.
Describing one of Daliz' satirical miniature houses, The Buffalo News said "color conquers all with a layer of whimsy."
"From my Hispanic heritage I derive a sense of drama and black humor," said Daliz, "and instead of neutralizing subjectivity I heighten it."
Daliz, who has an M.A. from Ball State and an M.F.A from Wichita State, has displayed her work at Altered Space in Syracuse, N.Y., Matrix Gallery in Sacramento, Calif., Art Dialogue Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y., and in a solo show at the Rockefeller Art Center in Fredonia, N.Y.
Wendy L. Young of Arlington, Mass., who employs unusual images derived from her dreams and imagination, will display a mixed media collage, and paintings in oil and oil sticks.
"Awkward and angular shapes attract me," said Young. "My work (includes) my favorite images such as birds, animal heads, furniture, ladders and cages. These are often presented as images of containment and escape."
Young's talents have been exhibited at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, Conn., Silvermine Guild Arts Center in New Canaan, Conn., in a solo exhibit at Soho 20 Gallery in Manhattan, and are in the corporate collection of Reader's Digest. Young received her M.F.A. from the University of Cincinnati.
The event, held annually since 1994, is named for the late Robert Munford, a beloved Southampton College Art Professor (1971-91) who painted in Europe and New York City before joining the College. In Ibiza during the 1950s he joined Grupo Ibiza, a group of American and European artists who greatly influenced that era's Spanish art scene.
