Southampton, NY -- The Southampton College Men's Soccer Team will kick off its 1997 season on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 1 p.m., in a home game which will be broadcast several times on Cablevision's Peconic Bay TV Channel 27 throughout that week.
The Colonials open their 19-game season against the University of Southern Connecticut, a fellow Division II team considered to be one of the top collegiate soccer squads in the nation, regardless of division. In 1996, Southern Connecticut was the top-ranked team in Div. II.
Ed Goodhines, Head Soccer Coach and Associate Athletic Director for Long Island University's Southampton College, believes playing a soccer juggernaut in a televised game will be beneficial.
"Facing such a high caliber opponent is a great challenge and opportunity for our players," said Goodhines, whose team has captured two of the last three championships in the East Coast Athletic Conference. "I'm excited to have the game broadcast and see how our team measures up against Southern Connecticut."
Broadcasting the game for Channel 27 will be brothers John and Kevin McCrudden, each an accomplished soccer player. John McCrudden, Director of the Cooperative Education and Career Development Center at Southampton College, is a former professional soccer player with the Boston Minuteman of the NASL and New York Apollo of the ASL.
"Televising this game is another way for us to showcase events in the community," said Steve Lauri of Peconic Bay Cablevision Channel 27, which aired Southampton College men's basketball in 1996-97. The station is not new to soccer, having televised games in the East End Soccer League for several years.
