Center for Cultural & Racial Diversity Celebrates Latino Heritage Month with "We Are One: A Global Community Entering the New Millennium"

Southampton, NY -- The Center for Cultural and Racial Diversity and the Office of Student Activities at Southampton College of Long Island University will celebrate Latino Heritage Month with several events scheduled for this fall.

The celebration is entitled, "We Are One: A Global Community Entering the New Millennium."

"Music, poetry and lectures are just a few ways we will celebrate Latino Heritage," said Nelson Troche, President of La Fuerza Latina, the Latino Club at Southampton College. "We invite everyone to enjoy these events."

On Friday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m., a trip to the Tito Puente concert at the Tilles Center on the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University will be offered. Tickets are $10, and are available at (516) 287-8361. Included is transportation by van, which leaves at 5:45 p.m. from the Wood Hall parking lot at Southampton College.

On Sunday, Sept. 28, transportation to The Hispanic Cultural Parade in Nassau County will be offered. Vans leave 7:30 a.m. from the College. For information call 287-8506.

On Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m., a free lecture, "Latinos In The Workforce," will feature prominent professionals from the Latin community in the Wood Hall Student Lounge.

On Sunday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m., "Vocal Sampling," a group of six Cuban vocalists, will perform in the Fine Arts Theatre. The talented ensemble has performed with Quincy Jones, Phil Collins, Chaka Khan and David Byrne. Tickets are available through the Office for Multicultural Programs (287-8356) or Student Activities (287-8361). The concert will be preceded by a Latino-style Cultural Dinner at 4:30 p.m. in the Wood Hall Cafeteria.

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, the film La Familia, and a discussion on Latino issues will take place. Time TBA.

On Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 6:30 p.m., an Open Microphone Poetry Night, reflecting Latino Heritage, will be offered in The Cove at Southampton College' Wood Hall. For information contact Dakita Ross at 287-7484.

On Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m., author/poet Piri Thomas will give a free lecture, "We Are One: A Global Community Entering the New Millennium," in the Fine Arts Theatre. Thomas' 1967 book, Down These Mean Streets, was hailed as "a linguistic event" by The New York Times, and was included in a recent list of the 10 best books about life in New York.
