Southampton, NY -- Dr. M. Anthony Fitchue, who possesses broad international experience and a distinguished background in higher education, has been named Director of the Office For Multicultural Programs and the Study Center at Southampton College of Long Island University.
Prior to joining Southampton College, Dr. Fitchue served as Director of Multicultural Affairs at LeMoyne College.
"We are pleased to announce the appointment of Anthony Fitchue," said Academic Dean Wayne Miller. "His diverse accomplishments as an educator and administrator will enrich the intellectual life of Southampton College and the community."
As a college professor, Dr. Fitchue taught Journalism and Foundations of Education at LeMoyne, African American Studies at SUNY Cortland, Education and the Community at the College of New Rochelle, Basic Writing at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, Developmental English at Iona College, and Essay Writing at Medger Evers College.
Dr. Fitchue has an exceptional international resume, having held positions as a foreign service officer with the U.S. Information Agency, a Cultural Attache' in West Africa at the U.S. Embassy in Mali, and later as Vice Consul at the U.S. Consulate in Madras, India.
At Columbia University, Dr. Fitchue earned an Ed.D. in Adult Education and Education History in 1995, an M.A. in Adult Education in 1992, and an M.S. in Journalism in 1971. He also holds an Ed.M. degree from Harvard University (1974) and a B.S. degree in Social Science Education from Hampton University (1967).
Dr. Fitchue served as National Coordinator of Youth Programs for the National Urban League from 1987-90, Consultant to the Chancellor of the New York City School System in 1988, Special Assistant to the Director of the U.S. Dept. of Labor from 1979-81, and as Special Assistant to the Director of Teacher Corps at the U.S. Dept. of Education from 1974-76.
At Southampton College, Dr. Fitchue has helped launch the 1st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, scheduled for Feb. 5, 1998, at 7 p.m., in the College's Fine Arts Theatre. The keynote speaker will be the Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts III, Pastor of Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church. For information on the event, call (516) 287-8356.
