WPBX-FM Celebrated
- Southampton’s WPBX, 88.3-FM, celebrated its first year of broadcasting at 25,000 watts and its enrollment in the National Public Radio family with a well-attended party at Southampton's Meadow Club on July 29. Special guests at that soiree were NPR journalists Tom Gjelten and Linda Wertheimer.
Those who could not attend the Meadow Club party, had a second chance to celebrate the anniversary with birthday cake and champagne served on August 1 in Southampton Hall's Ocean View Lounge. During that party Alexandra McCarty, the station's general manager since 1992, announced she was leaving the station to pursue her radio career in Washington D.C. Southampton Town declared it Alexander McCarty Day and both Southampton and East Hampton towns issued laudatory proclamations.
Frank Sundram, formerly the general manager of WFSS-FM, public radio at Fayetteville State University, has been named the new director of the station. At WFSS-FM, he increased listenership by 30 per cent in one year, and his experience as both an instructor and technical specialist is expected to be a great asset. He was welcomed to the station on September 1 and now oversees the station's day-to-day management, programming, and scheduling.
